Il diciassettenne Kyle (Alex Pettyfer) è il principe bello, viziato, superficiale e incredibilmente popolare del suo liceo. Sicuro e pieno di sé, Kyle scioccamente sceglie come bersaglio delle sue umiliazioni Kendra (Mary-Kate Olsen), una compagna di classe che si veste dark e che si vocifera sia una strega. Kendra, per nulla turbata dal comportamento crudele di Kyle, decide di dargli una lezione: lo trasforma in un orribile mostro, il suo aspetto esteriore rispecchierà esattamente il suo modo di essere. L'attrazione verso la giovane è travolgente, quanto lo è la sua bellezza, e tra i due nasce un amore clandestino e tormentato, ma che grazie ad un'antica leggenda riesce ad unirli per l'eternita'.

Come ogni tipico artista che fa la fame, Louis riesce a trovare alloggio condividendo un minuscolo appartamento con Henry Harrison (Kevin Kline). Uomo dai gusti peculiari, dalla perfetta sintassi e senza una particolare occupazione, Louis rimane presto affascinato dalla bizzarra storia personale di Henry e dai suoi imprevedibili impegni. A quanto pare Henry è un "extra man" - un escort che tiene compagnia a facoltose donne in età avanzata. Mentre Henry gli insegna ad entrare gratis all'opera e a mescolarsi con l'alta società, Louis scopre una rete di ruffiani e di scrocconi, per la maggior parte apertamente disprezzati dallo stesso Henry.
